Extra Credit Projects

Extra Credit projects are worth 100 points and are due: March 25, 2010. No late projects will be accepted. Choose one of the following options for your term project or if you have a special project in mind, see me for the okay.  All projects must be three to five pages, typed, double-spaced, maximum font of 14. In addition to the three to five pages you must have a title page, bibliography (list of at least 3 references) and at least one visual aid. All work must be you OWN writing. Papers that are copied, cut pasted, etc, directly from internet sources WILL NOT be accepted.

 

1.     Research and report on the development and use of annual flu vaccines. You may supplement your report with articles on the flu and vaccines from recent years. Include the role of immunizations  (positive and negative), available treatments, populations at risk, possibility of a pandemic, preventative measures, issues of supply and demand, etc.

2.     Research and report on the increasing occurrence of skin cancer, include types of skin cancer, causes, treatments, prevention, new research, genetic links, etc. You may supplement your report with pictures, diagrams, charts, graphs, etc.

3.     Interview an individual who works in the health care professions. Research their job title, education, experience needed, job market, availability, salary, etc, You may include an audio or video tape of your interview or you many schedule your health care professional to present to the class as a guest speaker. Times, subject matter, worksheets for the class must be approved in advance.

 

4.     Research and report on a genetic disorder. Include information on origin, frequency in the population, symptoms, treatment (if any), counseling, current research, current or future therapy, future outlook, etc.

5.     Research and report on the role of the integumentary system. Discuss the functions of the different tissues, role nutrition plays in the regulation of body systems , disorders.

6.     Research and report on the heal problems associated with smoking. Include current data/ statistics on numbers of smokers, costs to health care, advertising issues, “quit smoking’ options/campaigns, public opinions/issues, etc.

 

7.     Research and report on lung or skin transplants. You may choose to be general and cover issues that are common to all lung and skin transplants or you may be specific and discuss a particular type of transplant. Be sure to include issues of availability, rejection/immune suppressing drugs, ethical dilemmas, organ donor options, etc.

8. Research and create an artistic example of fetal development. Show/discuss the different stages and possible problems that could develop during the different stages of development. Include the effect of drugs, alcohol, and smoking on the developing fetus.
